AbbaGirls In Korea

Congratulations to The AbbaGirls on your
Successful tour of Korea
March 2nd – March 10th
AbbaGirls arrived at Seoul’s Incheon
Airport to awaiting press, and also some of the Korean Abba fans
carrying flowers for the Abbagirls, the promoters in Korea gave them
advanced warnings that they will make AbbaGirls famous in Korea,
they really achieved it!
AbbaGirls first duty was a press release: Twelve national
newspapers, three cable TV channels and KBS TV (equivalent to our
BBC) all present and firing questions at them via an interpreter.
From then on AbbaGirls were in all the national papers and on the
news bulletins daily. Their pictures were on the side of buses,
large bill boards, and posters all around Seoul and Ulsan.
AbbaGirls second and third gigs were in Ulsan, some 250 miles from
Seoul, these two gigs were sponsored by Hyundai. The two gigs were a
total sell out in there own theatre.
On the Saturday the AbbaGirls performed at
the KBS TV Concert Hall, Seoul’s largest venue, and sponsored by KBS
TV. The two gigs sold out, but of course it was really well
advertised on TV.
Their second show Saturday night went out Live on prime time KBS TV.
For those who have a good satellite dish, you can pick up the repeat
on KBS TV Monday 17th March.
After now performing all over the USA,
Middle East, Europe and now Asia they can safely use the term “An
International Act”

Undercover Blondie
or
The Parallel Lives of a Debbie-Double

By Michelle Hendriks
It was
pure fate and good karma that brought me to Manchester on the same
day as Blondie’s show at the Apollo. I'd been asked to appear on a
BBC show 'Identity' hosted by Donny Osmond and the filming date just
happened to coincide with one of Blondie's shows. Before I could go
off and enjoy myself at Blondie's show, I, myself had to sing for my
supper, as I had a day’s work to do first.
I arrived in
Manchester late on Tuesday afternoon, just in time to fit in a bit
of essential shopping before getting a good night’s sleep and ready
for my big day ahead on Wednesday. A cab was there to meet me at
Manchester’s
Piccadilly station to take me to my hotel, also called the
Piccadilly (Once the top hotel in Manchester, they’ve had all the
top stars stay there, Elton John, Rod Stewart, and most importantly
... Blondie.
The hotel was a
bit past it’s
prime—not a timeless beauty like our Debbie.
After
a night of pampering, I woke up ridiculously early at 5.45 AM. I got
ready, with full-on Debbie makeup. Then after breakfast, my cab
arrived to take me to Granada TV studios (it’s a BBC show but
everyone films there now).
At 8.00 AM I
arrived at the studios and received a briefing about the show. I was
then taken down to makeup and wardrobe for checks. The makeup lady
actually had Debbie herself in her chair when the BBC documentary
was being
made. She complemented me on my makeup and just gave me a dusting of
powder and a dab of gloss. She told me that Debbie hadn’t wanted
anyone else doing her makeup either and had arrived as I had fully
made up. Another thing Debbie and I have in common, we both went to
beauty school. I trained to be a beauty therapist in the 1980s but
chose music instead. The makeup lady told me that she and Clem had a
good chat about Bruce Springsteen—she was a big fan and it seems so
is Clem.
At around 11.30
it was show time. We are asked to head into the recording studio.
Funny enough, it’s the same studio where I filmed Stars & Their
Doubles. We were asked to position ourselves on our podiums. The
audience was brought in,and cameras at the ready ... not for us but
for the star of the show, none other than former teen idol Donny
Osmond. Donny looked great; sparkly eyed with very white teeth. The
contestant, was brought on. Her objective was to uncover our
Identities. There are 12 strangers and 12 occupations. Match all 12
and it’s 10 grand! I can’t say how well she did but I was relieved
when she identified me straight away. She actually said, “Well, if
that’s not a Debbie Harry look-alike, then
it must be the real Debbie Harry!” I was chuffed to hear that, it
could have been highly embarrassing if she hadn’t known who I was
supposed to be.
After I was identified I had to sing a line from “Atomic,” and a
have a little joke with Donny (who was very sweet to me).
I was taken
back stage to a waiting area and chatted with the other identified
stranger who was famous celebrity chef, Brian Turner (not a
look-alike). I got him a glass of water and asked him if it was
served to his satisfaction. He said “I’ll
Always remember the day that Debbie Harry served me a glass of
water.” Bless him.
After the show there was just time for a few words with Mr. Osmond
but alas, no time to grab my camera for a picture. He asked if I
was staying in Manchester. I told him that I was off to see Blondie
that night. He said that he would have liked to have seen the show
too, but was off filming somewhere and couldn’t get away. How cool
was that, nearly had Donny in the audience with us.
After a
quick lunch in the TV studio canteen (sharing a table with a few
Corrie stars) I headed off to hotel No. 2 which is one of the two
5-star hotels in Manchester and is absolute luxury. I can’t say
which one it is, but I know Blondie stayed there on their last tour.
Good choice.
I had just enough time to meet up with my good friend Louise
Pinches (who writes for the Blondie Review) for the Blondie
concert—we are ready for an “Atomic” night of Blondieness in
Manchester! Nothing could top that day!
